India's fifth-generation stealth fighter jet's engine development situation.

The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), the country's top security authority, is set to approve the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Before moving into the manufacturing phase, the project is in the last stages of obtaining approvals. India will join the US, Russia, and China as members of a restricted group of nations possessing super-cruise and stealth aircraft capabilities thanks to the AMCA.

The project has the support of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), which guarantees it will receive all required clearances. It does, however, have some reservations about the fighter jets' engine development schedule. The PMO is of the opinion that India cannot continue to rely solely on foreign-made engines for its fighter jet program. Last month, the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), which is creating the AMCA, answered the concerns of the PMO.

To co-develop fighter jet engines in India, ADA is attempting to team up with at least three foreign companies—Safran, France's the US's GE, and the UK's Rolls Royce. The GE-414 engines would power the first 40 AMCA jets. The engine for the AMCA Mark 2—the second iteration of the aircraft—was jointly developed in India. For the AMCA Mark 2, which is estimated to enter production in 2035, India intends to domestically develop a new engine with 110kN Class thrust. To fulfill the criteria for super-cruise, this is done. The GE-414 engine has a thrust range of 95–98kN.

The same engine was chosen for the domestic LCA Mk 2. To expedite the creation of an improved version of the LCA Mk2, the CCS had allocated Rs 6,500 crore in additional funding in September. India has proven its capabilities in the development of nuclear submarines, aircraft carriers, and even fighter jets, but a homegrown combat jet engine is still elusive.

The AMCA project is running behind schedule, therefore defense scientists are waiting for the CCS to give the all-clear. The crucial design assessment for the jet has been completed, putting it in an advanced level of development. In order to avoid being detected by enemy radars or their air defense systems, stealth aircraft are created.

Their "First Look, First Kill" concept will enable AMCA pilots to identify an enemy aircraft before the adversary does, fire a missile at the target, and destroy it before the adversary has a chance to respond.

All Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft, including the Rafales, lack the "low observability" trait that is a feature of fifth-generation aircraft. The feature makes the aircraft hard to detect, and even when it gets close, the enemy receives little reaction time. The Union government provided a pitiful sum of Rs 90 crore in 2009 for a feasibility study before providing a further Rs 447 crore for the development of India's future fighter jet. The AMCA has allocated Rs 15,000 crore for the prototype's development. The first aircraft under the AMCA program won't be produced for at least four years, even with the CCS approval. For the development of the first five prototypes and flight testing, ADA has a 10-year roadmap.

The fifth-generation fighter aircraft are more expensive than the fourth-generation aircraft because of their unique qualities, according to a statement made to Parliament earlier this year by Union Minister of State for Defense Ajay Bhatt.

However, because AMCA is a domestic project, it will be less expensive than comparable aircraft on the market. Without the weapons package, maintenance fees, and improvements specific to India, according to defense scientists, the cost of the basic aircraft may be between 50% and 60% less than what is already on the market. A scientist countered, "However, when the life-cycle cost is analyzed, it will undoubtedly be lower by roughly 70%.
