President of the United Nations General Assembly Abdulla Shahid has advocated for changes in UN governance while praising the role played by India at the international organisation. He asserted that the geopolitics of the contemporary world order must be reflected in the Security Council. On the first day of his two-day visit to India, Shahid spoke with S Jaishankar, the minister of external affairs, about a variety of important topics, including cooperation in the UN.
The 76th session of the General Assembly's accomplishments as well as the value of multilateralism were discussed, according to the UNGA chief.
It's always nice to meet India's Minister of External Affairs, H.E. @DrSJaishankar. We spoke about the accomplishments of the 76th General Assembly session as well as the value of multilateralism," he tweeted.
In an interview with ANI, Shahid stated that during his one-year stay at the UN, he urged the member states to speed up the process and that the UNSC will lose credibility if reforms are not made quickly. "The International Security Council negotiation process has been ongoing for fourteen years. Since the Security Council needs to reflect the present geopolitics of the globe, I have repeatedly urged the member states to expedite this process over the course of the past year. It can't just disappear into thin air. If not, the organization's credibility would keep eroding, according to Shahid.
Shahid, the Maldives' foreign minister, emphasised that India has proven to be the "pharmacy of the world" and helped various countries in the most distant areas of the planet while acknowledging the crucial role India played during the COVID-19 rehabilitation phase.
Always good to meet H.E. @DrSJaishankar, India’s Minister of External Affairs.
